K.Balachander entered the Tamil cinema world as a scriptwriter. His debut film as a director was the Tamil movie Neerkumizhi ( meaning Water bubble ), which was released in 1965.

 It was based on the stage play of same name.The cast in prominent roles included Sowcar Janaki, Nagesh, ‘Major' Sundararajan and V. Gopalakrishnan.
