Suriya is the stage name of Saravanan Sivakumar, son of Tamil Actor Sivakumar. Suriya's debut movie was Nerrukku Ner ( meaning- Face to face).
This movie produced by Mani Ratnam and directed by Vasanth, was released on September 6th 1997.
Vasanth had initially offered Suriya the lead role in his 1995 film 'Aasai', but Suriya had rejected that offer since at that time he was not interested in acting.
Suriya's break through movie was Nandha, which was directed by Bala.  He received a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for Nanda movie.
